Course Description
The Helicopter UPRT course provides the tools required to prevent, identify and recover from upsets. Academic topics include aerodynamics, concepts and limitations associated with rotary wing flight, review of H-V diagrams, hazards unique to helicopter operations, such as vortex ring state, dynamic roll-over, settling with power, retreating blade stall, and unusual attitudes, amongst others. These topics are related to Upset Prevention and Recovery and give the student the tools to deal with upsets. A building-block approach is utilized to introduce concepts one at a time, affording the opportunity for full comprehension. Ground training includes helicopter-specific training, flight briefings and debriefings. Flight training includes at least one of three helicopter types between the OH-58C, BO-105M and EC-145, of approximately 1.2 hours each.
Each student will:
- Receive 12 hours of academic training to include:
- Helicopter UPRT Intro
- Helicopter Basic Aerodynamics
- Performance Considerations
- Energy Management and Lift Vector Control
- Basic Maneuvers & DVE Techniques
- DVE & Unusual Attitude Case Studies
- Unusual Attitude Recovery Techniques
- Upset recognition and recovery techniques
- Psychological Considerations
- Environmental & Mechanical Considerations
- Operational Considerations/Applications
- Receive approximately 7 hours of ground training:
- Aircraft specific ground training
- Flight gear fitting and issue
- Aircraft specific cockpit familiarization
- Local area familiarization
- Flight briefings and debriefings
- Receive two flights in a helicopter of approximately 1.2 hours each to include:
- Helicopter UPRT Principles, basic handling, upsets and recoveries
- Helicopter UPRT Advanced Handling
- Helicopter UPRT Advanced Upsets and recoveries
